Child CPR

A child is anyone from the ages of 1 years old up to puberty!

  • Make sure the scene is safe
  • Tap and shout to try to get them to respond
  • If the child does not respond shout for help, and have someone call 911 and get an AED
  • Check for breathing (watch for chest rise) for up to 10 seconds
  • If the child is unresponsive and not breathing or is gasping begin CPR
  • Make sure the child is lying on his/her back on a firm flat surface
  • Move clothes out of the way
  • Use one 1 or 2 hands to give compressions
1 hand: Put the heel of one hand on the center of the chest (over the lower half of the breastbone)
2 hands: Put the heel of one hand on the center of the chest (over the lower half of the breastbone)
Put the other hand on top of the first hand
  • Push straight down at least one third the depth of the chest or about 2 inches
  • Press at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
  • Be sure and let the chest come back to its normal position after each compression
  • After 30 compressions, open the airway with one hand on the head and one on the chin,
give 2 normal breaths over 1 second each until you see chest rise
  • Repeat 30 compressions and 2 breaths until an ambulance arrives or the child becomes responsive.

If you are alone, follow the steps above except call 911 after you have completed 5 cycles of compressions and breaths.

By attending a CPR class you will have real time hands on practice with a manikin. You will also have opportunities throughout the course to ask questions with a trained certified American Heart instructor. If interested in learning more you can register at www.texascpr.com.

There are many reasons why a child’s heartbeat and breathing may stop and they include some of the following: Choking, Severe asthma, Poisoning, Near drowning, Smoke inhalation, Head trauma, Electrical shock, SO be prepared, learn CPR www.texascpr.com!
