Infant CPR Training
For babies newborn up to 1 year of age
- Make sure the scene is safe
- Tap the babies foot and try to get them to respond
- If the baby does not respond shout for help, and have someone call 911
- Check for breathing (watch for chest rise) for up to 10 seconds
- If the infant is unresponsive and not breathing or is gasping begin CPR
- Make sure the infant is lying on his/her back on a firm flat surface
- Move clothes out of the way
- Place 2 fingers of only 1 hand on the breastbone, just below the nipple line
- Press straight down at least one third the depth of the chest or about 1 1/2 inches
- Press at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.
- Be sure and let the chest come back to its normal position after each compression
- Open the airway with one hand on the head and one on the chin,
cover the mouth and nose with your mouth and give 2 small breaths over 1 second each until you see chest rise - Repeat 30 compressions and 2 breaths until an ambulance arrives or the baby becomes responsive.
If you are alone, follow the steps above except call 911 after you have completed 5 cycles of compressions and breaths.
By attending an infant CPR class you will have real time hands on practice with a manikin. You will also have opportunities throughout the course to ask questions with a trained certified American Heart instructor. If interested in learning more you can register at www.texascpr.com.
There are many reasons why an infant’s heartbeat and breathing may stop and they include some of the following: Choking, Severe asthma, Poisoning, Near drowning, Smoke inhalation, Head trauma, Electrical shock, SO be prepared, learn infant CPR!
