Lifesavers Bystanders CPR Success Stories

Being trained in administering basic life support techniques including First Aid and CPR only has proven incredibly useful and beneficial in many cases. Whether an emergency situation occurs at home to a family member or friend, or to a stranger in a public place; you will be able to perform lifesaving procedures that might save the victim’s life.

The following three success stories entail different situations where a bystander was able to save the day and perform emergency CPR. The common thread in all three stories is the fact that these people could have suffered serious cardiac damage if coincidentally people with CPR training were not present there.

1.     Hands-Only CPR Saves a Teen’s Life

Emma, a 13-year-old spelling bee enthusiast made her way to Buhler to attend and take part in an event on Jan 8, 2013. Taking permission from her father, Emma made her way to the spelling bee not knowing that she would suffer a cardiac arrest within hours of reaching Buhler.

In Emma’s case, her cardiac arrest was triggered by excitement and adrenaline surge. This was mostly pronounced by the fact that Emma suffered from a rare disorder called Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia or CPVT.

Emma’s case had been critical, threatening her life with long-lasting brain damage and even death. But her life was saved thanks to a mother in the event’s crowd who was trained with AHA’s hands-only CPR method. It was because of her that Emma was able to make a fairly quick recovery.

2.     Hardware Department Hero Saves Man with Hands-Only CPR

This story recounts how a bystander was able to perform emergency CPR on his coworker and save his life. The story starts when Chuck, a 72-year-old hardware store employee dropped unconscious as soon as he stepped out to have lunch like he would on any other regular day.

But his life was rescued when Floyd Flint, Chuck’s coworker, was able to respond quickly to the emergency.  As soon as he saw Chuck fall down, Flint flipped him over and began performing emergency hands-only CPR. The credit goes to the publicly-available video Flint saw and remembered the steps taught in it.

Because of this video and Flint’s ability to respond promptly with no hesitation, Chuck was able to recover from the cardiac arrhythmia without any long-lasting medical effects and damages.

3.     16-Year-Old Saves a Shopper’s Life

The last story recounts the story of how Riley Hinman, a 16-year-old was able to save a man’s life in Target. Paul Minton walked into a Target on a normal Sunday afternoon before he made way to meet his son. But suddenly, Minton suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the store’s floor. Riley, who had recently learned CPR in a babysitting training, was quick to respond and started performing hands-only CPR.

She got a bystander to call 911 and called for additional help. With Dr. Tiffany Elliot’s (another shopper) help they were able to keep his body oxygenated while until the emergency responders arrived.
